A Night in Peru’s Skylodge

Sleeping in a glass capsule above Peru’s Sacred Valley — where altitude sickness, fear, and love collided in the most unexpected night of my life.

Peru holds a special place in my heart.

Machu Picchu had lived quietly on my bucket list since childhood — one of those distant dreams you assume will remain a dream forever. Yet here I was, boarding a plane to South America with a man who had been a stranger only eight months before.

What began with the worst migraine of my life — courtesy of the altitude in Cusco — would end with a marriage proposal in a glass capsule hanging off a cliff in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Travel has a strange sense of humor.

First Impressions of Cusco: Coca Leaves and Culinary Heaven

The moment we landed in Cusco, the altitude greeted us like a mischievous host.

My head was pounding. The air felt thinner, sharper somehow. But there was also something intoxicating about it — crisp mountain air mixed with the faint earthy scent of coca leaves, which locals and travelers alike use to ease altitude sickness.

And once the migraine retreated, my curiosity returned in full force.

Our first mission?

Food.

Cusco’s historic Plaza de Armas is surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and hidden culinary gems. Over the next few days we wandered between traditional Peruvian kitchens and inventive Asian-Peruvian fusion restaurants, discovering a gastronomy scene that completely stole my heart.

Peru is, quite simply, a paradise for food lovers.

And what surprised me most was this: it didn’t matter whether we were eating at a humble street stall, a stylish restaurant, or a lunch prepared by Quechua locals during our hikes — everything tasted extraordinary.

Even the chicken.

I grew up with organic, free-range chickens raised by my mother, so I thought I knew what good poultry tasted like. But in Peru the meat had a deep yellow color and a flavor that was richer, more aromatic — cooked slowly with Peruvian herbs and a touch of ají limo pepper.

A quick meal before a hike quickly became a dish we devoured down to the last bite.

The Skylodge Adventure Begins

Our next destination was Skylodge Adventure Suites, a place I had only seen in photographs — glass capsules suspended hundreds of meters above the Sacred Valley.

All we knew beforehand was this:

  • The sleeping pods were entirely made of glass

  • Getting there required hiking up a mountain

  • There would be rock climbing

  • There was a zipline between two peaks

  • And the following day we would descend via seven ziplines

Climbing Toward the Sky

We were fitted with harnesses and climbing equipment while our guides patiently explained the safety procedures and the history of the Skylodge.

Their calm professionalism helped settle my nerves.

The climb itself was… unforgettable.

The rock face rose steeply above the valley, and our only handholds were metal bars anchored into the stone. Step by step, breath by breath, we climbed higher while the valley floor slowly dropped away beneath us.

Eventually we reached the Skylodge dining pod, where all the climbers gathered for dinner.

Suspended in a transparent capsule overlooking the Sacred Valley, we shared stories and laughter while the sun disappeared behind the Andean peaks.

Then it was time to retire to our private pod.

A Night Suspended Between Earth and Sky

When we entered our glass suite, I stood still for a moment, completely overwhelmed.

The floor beneath my feet was transparent, revealing the vast abyss below. Far beneath us, the river carving through the Sacred Valley shimmered faintly in the moonlight.

Above us, the sky stretched endlessly — a dark canvas scattered with stars and framed by a glowing Andean moon.

It felt like floating between worlds. And then something even more unexpected happened.

My boyfriend turned toward me. Sat down on one knee. And asked me to marry him.

There, suspended on a cliff in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the world seemed to pause. I said YES.

Flying Through the Sacred Valley

The following morning, still floating somewhere between disbelief and joy, we prepared for the descent.

Seven ziplines awaited us.

At this altitude, ziplining feels less like sliding along a cable and more like flying across the sky. The wind roars in your ears, the valley opens beneath you, and for a few exhilarating seconds you feel impossibly small inside the vastness of the Andes.

It was terrifying.

It was thrilling.

It was unforgettable.

Much like Peru itself.
